Icebergs and Binoculars

Icebergs and Binoculars

This week, the world will be marking the 98th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. One of the saddest things about the entire tragedy is that it is very likely that it could have been prevented!

Frederick Fleet, the young lookout positioned on the forward mast was relying on his own unaided vision to spot any dangerous icebergs floating in the path of the doomed ship that night. As a result, he and the other lookout were unable to identify the danger directly in their path until it was too late to avoid collision.

"Employed as a lookout aboard Titanic, it was Fleet who first sighted the iceberg, ringing the bridge to proclaim, 'Iceberg, right ahead!'

Fleet testified at the inquiries that if he had been issued binoculars,

he would have seen the iceberg sooner, because it was a blue iceberg in calm seas on a moonless night."

Our world is careening towards multiple disasters in the near future, yet, just like Titanic's passengers, we continue to dance our lives away away in blissful ignorance.

"When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah's day.     In those days before the Flood, the people were enjoying banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat. People didn't realize what was going to happen until the Flood came and swept them all away. That is the way it will be when the Son of Man comes."       - Matthew 24:37-39

Even those of us in the "Lookout's Nest" are unequipped to prevent the dangers ahead with our own unaided vision.

The lens of prophecy is the advantage

we need to avoid disaster!

"This is what the Lord, Israel's King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty, says: I am the First and the Last; there is no other God.  Who else can tell you what is going to happen in the days ahead ? Do not tremble; do not be afraid. Have I not proclaimed from ages past what my purposes are for you ? - Isaiah 44:6-8

Equipped with the knowledge of the certain signs of the last days as predicted in the Bible, we can steer a safe course in this life and assure ourselves of a safe harbor in the world to come.
